Alternative Service Break

During an Alternative Service Break (ASB), students are immersed in a different culture while providing direct service to a local community. Each team is led by a student team leader accompanied by a faculty or staff advisor. Teams spend a considerable amount of time preparing for their experience and researching their impact on the communities they will interact with prior to travel. To enhance their service experience, members participate in a variety of cultural, educational, recreational, and reflective activities.

The Goals of Alternative Service Break

  • To develop and enhance a value for public service, civic engagement, and service-learning within the participants.

  • To develop diverse service teams committed to exploring and advocating for social justice issues.

  • To help participants reflect on their privileges and begin to use these to break down the systems that afford unearned privilege in our society.

  • To provide opportunities for participants to reflect on their roles in a global community.

  • To provide opportunities for cultural and language immersion through service projects with diverse individuals and communities.

Guatemala Trip Overview

The Women’s Center teams up with Student Leadership and Engagement to host an Alternative Service Break trip to Guatemala focusing on gender issues. Participants on this trip explore:

  • Traditional understandings of masculinity, femininity, and non-binary gendered identities,

  • Historical and contemporary manifestations of gender-based violence in Guatemala, and

  • How gender influences the daily lives of Guatemalans, often evidenced most clearly through structured systems that perpetuate situations of poverty and restrictive definitions of how people experience life.

  • Break dates: March 9-17th, 2024
