My cultural immersion experience was traveling to Hoonah, Alaska with the Student Leadership and Engagement team on their Alternative Service Break (ASB). This program involves direct community service within Hoonah's K-12 school system while being immersed within the Tlingit culture. The primary goal of this program is to enhance value for public service and help us reflect on our privileges.
I chose to include this ASB experience as my cultural immersion project because I wanted to immerse myself into Tlingit culture and Native Alaskan students experience, prior to meeting them so that I could better understand my temporary role within their society.
